What is being human? Animal researchers have observed traits once thought to be uniquely human: courage, compassion, mercy, and grief, to name a few. Perhaps in our sheltered, mechanized, and lit-up world, we have forgotten our own animal nature and our greater connection to the four-footed and winged travelers with whom we share this world. Our human abilities are powerful and extraordinary and confer upon us a fundamental responsibility. May the connection we share foster our humanity and generous spirit.
